We can share our experiences with each tool, pros and cons of the different tools and why one tool might be better than another tool. We are not recommending one particular tool, because we understand each instructor has different 'workflows' and needs (for example: one or two screens, webcam, screen only, etc.). If you are not sure what tool to use, please reach out to the LDG team and we will be happy to guide you through this transition from TechSmith Relay. Visit OIT's Personal Capture page to learn more. Personal Capture is part of My Mediasite and includes a screen recorder. You can learn about Zoom on OIT's support page. We understand many faculty are familiar with this tool and some use it to record their lectures. Zoom has been heavily used for remote/hybrid classes since Spring 2020.

TECHSMITH RELAY SERIES

The LDG team has a video series on Canvas Studio on our Suggested Tools for Recording Videos page. At this time, it is unclear how long this tool will be available for CU Boulder faculty/staff/students. It became available for CU Boulder faculty/staff/students in August 2020 and OIT's support Canvas Studio page has more information about this tool. Canvas StudioĬanvas Studio includes a screen recording application that is simple to use and functions like TechSmith Relay. The new tool should be available as a pilot in Fall 2021.

Our understanding is that the Kaltura service will be discontinued after Spring 2022 and will be replaced with a similar platform that is more suitable for our university, and OIT is currently in the Request for Proposal (RFP) process. The LDG team created a series of tutorials on Kaltura Capture that you can find on our Suggested Tools for Recording Videos page. OIT does not have a dedicated support page for Kaltura Capture as it is a part of Kaltura/My Media ecosystem (with full Canvas integration).

The Learning Design Group understands that it might be challenging to 'switch' from one software to another, but we are here to help you with this transition!īelow you will find a list of tools available for CU Boulder faculty/staff to replace TechSmith Relay.

With the current shift to hybrid/remote learning in 2020 due to COVID-19, OIT has expanded tools that allow instructors to record their lectures. The Office of Information Technology (OIT) at CU Boulder provides multiple alternatives to TechSmith Relay. You do not have to migrate any of your existing videos, they will remain in any Canvas course they have been added to and will still be in Canvas MyMedia. The videos that you have already recorded with TechSmith Rely are on the CU Boulder Kaltura server and are still available. We have made the difficult decision to decommission the TechSmith Relay service effective December 31, 2020. We are asking you to stop using TechSmith Relay to record any new videos. TechSmith's business model has also recently changed, and we are not planning to subcribe for cloud hosting (Relay has been renamed to Knowmia and serves not just as a video creating tool, but mainly as a sharing platform).

Our current license does not allow us to upgrade the software since we are self-hosting the Relay server on campus.

Continuing Education at CU Boulder has been providing the TechSmith Relay service to instructors for over 10 years.
